Week 4 Group Task--- Analyse The Role of Student in An Innovative Classroom Yao Ruyan( Abby)

New technology is updating faster than ever before and we all hear about iPads. We are looking forward to how this technology brings new ways to communicate, organize, work and learn. This is an example that using iPads in the classroom makes basic academic standards more engaging innovative and help learning faster.http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=1i6IXC9kRwA
Using iPads in the classroom is not about just using the new technical tools,it's the thinking process goes along with the technology skills that students must use that's so important.
In this innovative classroom, students plays vary roles
1.participants:Because of the new tools-iPads,all the students are very interested in this class and active in all the class or after class activities.
2.self-learner:All students are using iPads to learn about stories and follow the development of the plot by themselves after the teacher showed how to use.Students can decide the learning plan depending on their own progress.
3.co-teacher:In the class, the teacher would tell the students about the learning objects and show them the basic operation in iPads. After that, students would use the iPads by themselves and the good users would teach the others how to operate.
I think the class is very great, students are learning the newest things which they will use a lot in their work and life."Using iPad for an assignment is really about expressing the main idea of a story and helps students use higher level thinking and skills."The technology helps students learning faster and discovers their learning interests.

Week 4 Group Task--- Analyse The Role of Student in An Innovative Classroom WU Hao( William)

The case I analyse is a controversial one, I translated the original web page into English https://docs.google.com/document/d/1UenzJTziT47-FyJScylrdZ2Goa_eeXBUa8GdbN4h1Qg/edit

Students’ roles in learning has always been the most critical factors of designing a classroom. According to different curriculums, students’ roles could be various but also similar in some aspects. This blog entry will mainly focus on the roles of students in Chinese poetry chanting class, a special learning experience for traditional Chinese poetry teaching.

Introduction
Due to the educational system of Chinese mainland, the teaching method has been instructional lectures for centuries. With the development of technologies and education integration, many educators in China begin to realise how important to attract students’ interests in learning, which has introduced a new teaching method for teaching traditional Chinese poetry --- Chanting class.
In old times, students were sitting in the classroom reciting all the poetic verses together in the same tones and rhythms. Nowadays, a new kind of class makes students to stand up and imagine themselves as the poets to perform the poets out with various music and rhythms based on the right rising and falling tone of ancient Chinese characters.

Week 4 Group Task--- Analyse The Role of Student in An Innovative Classroom HUANG Luyi( Louise)

An innovative case about flipped classroom with humanized-video

Salman Khan: Let's use video to reinvent education

Introduction:

This is a TED video by Salman Khan . In this lecture he show us some ideas about how and why he created the remarkable Khan Academy, a carefully structured series of educational videos offering complete curricula in math and now, other subjects. He shows the power of interactive exercises, and calls for teachers to consider flipping the traditional classroom script--give studnets video lectures to watch at home, and do "homework" in the classroom with the teacher availbable to help.

1)Integrate Khan Academy in classroom:

Salman Khan create the Khan Academy , which is a website-based video curricula system http://www.khanacademy.org/

He encourage teachers try to use this site to reinvent education when students can learn on this website at home and do the homework in the class with the help of teachers. This idea is one kind of flipped classroom, but even more the website is based on the some humanized-videos. There are thousands of videos in different subjects like Math,Science, Finance and Economics etc. Below them there are some sub-subjects.

Week 4 Group Task --- Analyse The Role of Student in An Innovative Classroom Qi Yang (Carol)

Exploring roles of students in innovative classrooms. Each group analyses an innovative case and identifies roles adopted by students. Each group will then present their case highlighting the role of students and the perceived degree of innovativeness ness of the case.

I have chosen the following case for our group activity:
Website Link:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05Fix3Veqww
This video shows a preview of ICT resources from LJ Create used along side hands-on experiments. This video features blended learning that includes eLearning, a mobile science solution called the science cart, virtual experiments including a virtual microscope and a virtual data logger. These resources were demonstrated at the BETT Show 2010 as part of the Building Schools for the Future zone.

1) Analysis on the six dimensions:
Intended curriculum goals of the innovative practices
As my group member mentioned before, the purpose and objective of using technologies in classrooms should be pre-considered during the preparation part. If the traditional instructive teaching could reach the objective of acquiring knowledge, then the teaching with innovative practices should be conducted on a higher level. In the case, there are plenty ICT-based teaching resources in the online repository for students to access. Thus, it is convenient for students to acquiring the content advanced and prepare well before class.

Week 3 Group Task --- HU Jiani (Janey)

Identify an innovative classroom
Analyse teacher roles in the classroom

In last week, we knew about the six dimensions of classroom practice. This dimensions can identify an innovative classroom adequately.

1. Intended curriculum goals of the innovative practices

The goals of the innovative practices are very important and should be considered during the class preparation.Teachers should understand the goals and then make the class effectively.
According to the case we researched(CN001),the instructor confirmed the goals and then designed the curriculum, and in some extent lead the practice reach it goals effectively.

Week 3 Group Task --- WU Hao (William)

Identify an innovative classroom
Analyse teacher roles in the classroom

Six dimensions of classroom practices were introduced in the class last week. Speaking of designing an innovative classroom, it is a good idea to talk about this issue based on the 6 dimensions.
1. Intended curriculum goals of the innovative practices
Similar to teaching objectives, the purpose and objective of using innovative application in education should pre-considered during the preparation part. If the traditional instructive teaching could reach the objective of acquiring knowledge, then the teaching with innovative practices should be conducted on a higher level.

  • Acquiring the knowledge and content of the curriculum

Week 3 Group Task---Qi Yang (Carol)

Task question of week 3
Identify an innovative classroom and Analyse teacher roles in the classroom

I’d like to share my experience of using Google Docs in my course 6023. I think it is one example of innovative classroom. The application allows students to create and edit documents online while collaborating in real-time with others as well as the teacher. Google Docs helps promote group work and peer editing skills, enables students and teachers to decide exactly who can access and edit documents. Teachers can use Google Docs both to publish announcements about upcoming assignments and to monitor student progress. Students that it can help them stay organized and keep on top of their assignments. They never have to remember to save their work; it happens automatically. It's easy to collaborate online with others, even when they are in different places, and they can get feedback easily from teachers, parents, relatives and tutors, and enter updates anytime from anywhere. This innovative classroom extend teaching & learning functionality, make teacher and student fully involved, stimulate learners to use technology effectively and make whole classroom tight connected. For me, I really enjoy such kind of learning.

Depending on the 6 dimensions, I identify an innovative classroom as follows:
For the curriculum goals, students are expected to gain or experience:
- Collaborative and organizational skills

Week 3 Group Task---HUANG Luyi (Louise)

Task question of week 3
Identify an innovative classroom
Analyse teacher roles in the classroom

In last week's class, we learnt about six dimension of classroom practices identified as most important of  any curriculum implementation using ICT , these six dimension including:

  1.  Intended curriculum goals of the innovative practices
  2.  Pedagogical roles of the teachers
  3.  Role(s) of the students
  4.  Nature and sophistication of the ICT used
  5.  Connectedness of the classroom
  6.  Learning outcomes exhibited by learner during learning

To identify an innovative classroom , first of all , it's important to analyze what's the innovative classroom like in this six dimensions.

1. Intended curriculum goals of the innovative practices
Innovative practices should explicitly identify what intended goals they want to reach.  Different from the traditional classroom ,innovative practices should contain more flexible outcomes and encourage students to reach a higher thinking level . I think most innovative practices should include the following goals.

  • master specific learning concepts ,content or skills

Week 2 Group Task 2---Case Analysis

Case Study CN001---My pocket money
URL: http://sitesdatabase.cite.hku.hk/M2/case2/CN001/Index.asp?case_ID=CN001

The projects "My Pocket Money" was designed and implemented by a primary school and conducted by the ICT team members who acted as the pioneers tried to facilitate students to complete a project in groups with a self-selected topic for their extra-curricular activities. Apart from selecting their topics, these students had also to decide their ways of data collection and analyze as well as reporting of findings.
The ICT goals of the school:
l          using ICT in teaching and learning to establish the school as an energetic and innovative learning area and to cultivate students as active, explorative and creative learners;
l          encourage students to make use of ICT to explore information on the Internet;
l          cultivate students to make use of the information from the Internet and to take the information as their own assets;
l          provide computer access for students by opening the computer lab after school in such a way that an ideal environment for self-learning can be created and the notion of lifelong learning can be fostered.

Week 2 Group Task --- What are the main reasons for innovation failures and success in education?

The factors that affect the success or failure of innovation in education varies in ways. The following aspects were discussed under the principle of student-centered pedagogical environment with innovations.

1. Preliminary analysis
Most innovation projects was focused on the design of the innovative pedagogy and process. The fundamental analysis about the learners, the learning and teaching environment and other indirect parts are easily ignored, which may result in the misjudgment of the students and resources and later leads to the failure.

2. A long-term plan
A long-term plan is significant for innovation in education, which should be durable and detailed. The long-term plan designs the strategic implementation, solutions to possible or predicted problems and a back-up plan.

3. Ideological recognition
This ideological recognition lies in the very bases of the whole innovation process, which includes acceptance of the innovation uses, the gap between ideal and reality. Only by cultivating the ideological recognition can people start to apply the innovation in education.

Week 2 Course Reflection --- HU Jiani (Janey)

Designing a new learning online---Does it have RASE?

The video showed us a innovative new learning environment . Our group choose the case CN001 to analysis. This case has a topic----MY POCKET MONEY.
According to the RASE Pedagogical Model, we can analysis as following:

1.To the "R" part ---- "R" means "resources", including learning objects, multimedia material, web content, tools,real-time teaching, textbooks and so on. In this case, the designers made a best use of innovative technology resources . Such as word processor, web page/multimedia production tool, internet browser and search engines, data analysis software, media capture equipment and the like, which is very abundant.

Week 2 Course Reflection --- Yao Ruyan (Abby)

Designing a new learning online---Does it have RASE?
The video  and the website show us a very innovative project about creating a new learning environment.
For the "R"-resources
It is a open platform on the internet and the participants are required to upload some digital materials. All those materials will be used in teaching part so that the resources provided to the learners will be in a large number and rich forms.
For the "A"-activities
There are many frames in the video showing learners involving in lots of activities such as discussing in groups, working together to complete tasks.
For the "S"-support
Just as I mentioned above,it's a open internet platform. The participants in this project are various for working areas, there are teachers, educators,IT workers and parents from every  areas. They can provide professional supports from their own fields.
For the "E"-evaluation
It is the biggest problem in this project. The learners of the course are from different countries and region which get various culture, behavior, custom and religions. It is very hard to create just one  standard or system to evaluate all those learners.

Week 2 Course Reflection --- Qi Yang (Carol)

Stanford online: Designing a new learning online---Does it have RASE?
The video shows designing and promoting online education in multicultural background areas around the world.
For the “R” part---It has variety learning resources, especially virtual ones like mobile phone, Internet access, video materials, synchronized teaching and the like, which are divers and abundant.
For the “A” part---Students will be involved in problem solving and collaborative tasks to get better understanding about content.  It displayed in the video that kids work together, cooperate to accomplish one task. It is easy and can motivate team work.
For the “S” part---Teachers act as supported instead of instructive role in teaching. They provide not only site instruction on device use but also online help for problem solving. Question and answering process become time and boundary unlimited.
For the “E” part---It may be the most difficult part in this case. Because students are from different national/social background and have dissimilar starting level, evaluation maybe complicated to undertake. For those who have experience with technology/Internet, e-portfolios and online presentation will be easy to handle, while in most developing areas perhaps writing reports will be better choice among learners. Furthermore, judgments on whether students benefit from learning online are complex due to various background/policy.

Week 2 Course Reflection --- HUANG Luyi ( Louise)

Designing A New Learning Environment ---Does it have RASE?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxfsO1BZtKo

The video and the website bring us a new project about designing a new learning environment. People who interested in this project and correspond with two requirements can just sign up and build their own course with a virtual team. The project is to promote systematic design thinking, to design a new learning environment that cause a paradigm shift in the learning environment of today and tomorrow.

Based on the introduction of the website and the video, let's see if it has the RASE?
For R, resources.
Participants are required to upload their assignments which will be digital artifacts such as powerpoint or video presentations. This resources will turn to be the teaching materials of the learning environment. In that way , resources are collected from many participants , it would be a rich database. So I assume that it should have enough resources.

For A, activity
It's said that it's a project-based course. Students of the course would have various dimensions of ability ,including identify and evalute the value of ideas, principles and techniques used in educational media or systems. In the final project, students will design a new learning model catering to 21st century environments and leaners.  So, it can be considered that activities is a major part of this project-based course, because only in that way can inspire students ideas and design abilities.

Week 2 Course Reflection --- WU Hao(William)

Have you eaten? Fine, thank you.
If you were asked “Have you eaten?” on the Beijing street, don’t feel weird, it is same with Chinese people responding to the question “How are you?” with a quick and firm answer “Fine, thank you. And you?”
Those two sentences are the result of standard education in China.
One week ago, I was taking a course at the university of Hong Kong, the professor was showing a video from Youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxfsO1BZtKo) which talks about designing and promoting online education in multicultural background areas all over the world. What an extraordinary thought!
Let’s put this Shakespearean idea aside and look at it with a RASE microscope. RASE (Resources – Activity – Support – Evaluation) is a pedagogical model developed to support teachers to use Moodle in effective, student-centered and engaging way to achieve intended learning outcomes in their courses.
Resources for the student would be the traditional books and hi-tech wireless products, for instance, mobile phones and internet etc. There are tens of thousands of teaching materials all over the world in many ways.
Activity through hi-tech is also easy to conduct. If student got confused about a question, a simple click on the mouse would get the help from his/her friend on the other side of the earth. Brainstorming could also be conducted in this international learning environment, meanwhile, it will also expand students’ outlooks.

Week 2 Group Discussion --- Qi Yang (Carol)

What are the main reasons for innovation failures and success in education?

Reasons for innovation failure in education:
-Lack of finance assistance to purchase or build up facilities
-be deficient in innovation consciousness
-not have enough or professional professor
-need sufficient teachers and students training
-complicated maintenance, modification, diversity
-no unified standard
-defective operation mechanism and management system
… …
Reasons for innovation success in education:
-strong technical support, robust equipment platform
-acknowledged and understood by most staff include students and teachers
-adapt to changing environment
-effective management with uniform criteria/policy
-plentiful information
… …

Week 2 Group Discussion --- Yao Ruyan(Abby)

What are the main reasons for innovation failures and success in education?

Failures:
1.    Resources: Innovation is the new move in education, the resources it can get would be limited.
2.    Process: In the procedure of innovation , many difficulties will come up according to different real situation.
3.    Culture: Innovation means creative actions in education. New things will be difficult for many races ,cultures to accept. Some of the innovative actions will have conflicts with the culture.

Success:
1.    Government supports: Innovation would get lots of supports by   government, such as
policy, finance, technology and labour powers.
2.    Ideological support: Nowadays  both students and teachers want and need    innovation. They are looking forwarding to the innovation and they also would like to test the innovation personally.

Analysis of the case
Our group choose the case--My pocky money http://sitesdatabase.cite.hku.hk/case_db_public/analysis_table.asp?id=CN003.During the case, there are several points supporting the success of the case.
1.Strong ICT support:The school has the experience of carrying out ICT innovation and the innovation is aligned with the Government initiative in ICT education.
2.Great teacher-guiding:Teachers monitor students’ task progression and support team building and collaborative process of students.
3.Economic support: Get funding for schools (ICT related-other than funding for ICT infrastructure).
4.Mature environment for innovation:The school has the experience and collaborative work culture among staff which provide a good environment for innovative ICT education.
